What is Coin Sorting
Sorting coin is is simply the activity of searching through a variety of different types of coin for specific types of coin. This is a rather broad definition of course, but it is accurate. We primarily sort pennies for metal value, separating copper pennies from non-copper pennies.
The metal value of a coin is not the only reason people sort coin. Many people sort pennies to find wheat cent pennies and indian head pennies. Other people look for error pennies. Still others look for key dates like the elusive 1909 VDB penny. These are just some examples of coin sorting specifically to the penny.
Every form of coin has the ability to be sorted for error coins, older rarer coins, key dates, etc. Nickels, for example, are often sorted for silver war nickels, buffalo nickels, and V nickels. Just about any U.S. coin is sorted for finding silver coins.
