The United States penny, or one-cent, weighs different amounts depending on the year the penny was made. Pennies used to be made of copper and switched to being made from zinc in the year 1982. So how much does a penny weigh? The answer:
Pennies weight in grams:
A copper penny weighs 3.11 grams when newly minted. The copper penny is made up of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
A zinc penny weighs 2.5 grams newly minted. The zinc penny is made up of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper.
Though prior to 1959, the penny was actually known as the wheat cent, the weight still went in line with 3.11 grams like the copper cent. The only exception was the 1943 production of US pennies which were made of steel. The reasoning for why pennies were made of steel in 1943 was because of the huge demand by the United States military for copper during World War II. As a result, steel was used instead, which is why so many 1943 pennies nowadays are heavily rusted or mutilated. Steel cent pennies weigh 2.70 grams and are actually magnetic.

A copper penny weight approximately .11 ounces (0.109702 exactly). A zinc penny weights approximately .088 ounces (0.0881849 exactly). While a steel cent weights approximately .095 ounces (0.0952397 exactly).
How many pennies in a pound
When wanting to weigh pennies per pound, there are 147 copper pennies in a pound and 182 zinc pennies per pound. In addition there are approximately 168 steel cents per pound. So there is actually less than $2 in coins per pound.
There are 10,000 pennies in $100 face value which weights approximately 68 pounds if all copper pennies. While if all zinc pennies, the weight of $100 face value would be 55 pounds.
How much does 1 pound of pennies weigh
One pound of pennies weighs 457.17 grams if all copper or 455 grams if all zinc. Since circulated coin contains both zinc and copper, the weight should fall somewhere in between those numbers.
How many pennies are in a ton
There are 294,000 copper pennies per ton. Mathematically: 1 ton = 2,000 pounds. 147 copper cents per 1 pound X 2,000 = 294,000.
For zinc cents, it would be 182 X 2,000 = 364,000.
